FAQ BREAD BAG
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What fits in the small bread bag?
1 loaf of bread (half kilo). Size of the small bread bag: 27x38 cm (10.6x15 in).
What fits in the big bread bag?
1 piece of bread weighing one kilo. The large bread bag measures 35x46 cm (13,5x18,1 in).
What is the difference between linen and cotton bags?
The outer layer of cotton bags is woven from 100% cotton, the handle is smooth and the weave is dense. A good choice for drier homes (humidity between 10-40%). A good choice if you buy yeast, white or semi-brown bread from the grocery store.
Here you can find our cotton bread bags: cotton bags.
The outer layer of linen bags is woven from 100% linen, a thicker fibre, slightly looser woven textile, better ventilated. A good choice if your home is more humid (humidity above 60%). A good choice if you buy bread from an artisan bakery, if you eat sourdough bread, or if you bake it at home.
Here you can find bread bags with the linen outer layer: linen bags.
More help to choose:
What is the bag lined with?
- with a special porous, breathable fabric that provides optimal ventilation. It keeps the bread moist, but lets in enough air to prevent mould..
- the fabric is food-safe, meaning no toxins can get into the bread
- laboratory-tested
- its porous layer provides optimal ventilation
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified
- BPA free
Does it really keep the moisture in?
Yes. Based on our mould tests and our experience, it was astonishing that bread stored in a lined bag stays soft much longer than bread stored in an unlined bag, bread box or paper bag. The cutting surface was barely dry from morning to night.
Compared to storing bread in a plastic bag: your bread will not be as soft as it is in a bag. This "softness" is caused by the bread filling up, which is not good, not healthy. Bread stored in a bread bag stays fresh in a different way. The crust does not become soggy and the bread does not become spongy.
Will my bread really not go mouldy?
No. In our tests, we monitored the bread for 10 days to see if it would go mouldy. During the 10 days, we did not observe any mould or similar signs in any of our bags.
Testing was carried out in a room with average humidity. If the room you are storing the bread in is damp, possibly mouldy, or has been mouldy in the past, or if you put the bread in the bag when it is warm, it may become mouldy.
Which bakery products can I use it for?
Use for bread, scones, whether store-baked or home-baked, yeast or sourdough.
Which bakery products should not be stored in bread bags?
Sliced bread, stale bread. Their durability comes from less moisture content, so they are inherently drier. There's a reason they're sold in plastic bags.
We also do not recommend the bag for smaller pastries such as bread rolls and buns. You can store them in it, but they will dry out quicker than larger baked goods because they are small. Small baked goods of good quality or baked at home will dry out less, but store-bought, often very crumbly, puffy buns and rolls will dry out quickly in it.
Better than storing in a plastic bag?
Yes, better. You can keep your bread healthy.
In a plastic bag, the bread will immediately start to fill up due to its own evaporation.
In a humid bag, the bread can become spongy, sour and mouldy in a few days, even if you take it out of the bag at least once a day.
Can I wash the bread bag?
Yes. Based on our washing tests, these are our recommendations:
- Hand washing or a gentle machine programme at a maximum of 30 degrees is recommended,
- Scented detergents are not recommended.
What to keep in mind:
- Do not wash the bag in water warmer than 30 degrees. The lining textile may be ruined. In this case, the warranty does not apply, please take this into account!
- Do not use fabric softener. It can also damage the lining.
- Do not use bleach – it will ruin the lining.
- Do not tumble dry. It can destroy the lining, the fabric will not breathe.
- Do not dry the bag on a heating pad. Best to dry the bag flat, at room temperature.
Can I iron the bag?
Only the outer canvas part. To do this, the lining must be pulled out of the bag.
The lining must not be ironed, it will melt from the heat, even if you iron it through the outer fabric. Pull it out, taking care not to touch it with the iron, you can iron the outer part. The pattern is water-based, so you can iron that too.
How do I use the bag?
Put the bread in it and tie it with the cotton tape. Put the bread in "naked", don't wrap anything in it first. It's worth keeping on the kitchen counter.
How do I handle the bag between two washes?
- Occasionally turn it inside out, wipe it with a damp cloth inside and let it dry.
- Pull out the lining and air it occasionally.
Whart else should I look out for?
- Don't put the bread in when it's hot!
- Do not dry it on a hot plate or heating pad!
When should I not buy a bread bag?
- If you don't eat bread.
- If you eat sliced bread,
- If you eat stale bread,
- If you only eat rolls, buns, small baked goods.
Is a bag good for storing bread rolls and buns?
Not recommended. Especially for store-bought, puffed, wet buns. They are smaller, but have a large surface area, and dry more easily without a bag than a heavier baked good.
SUMMARY:
The bag is good for everyday use, 3-7 days of storage, not long term. For long term storage, freezing is recommended.
For average home conditions (by this we mean 50-60% humidity, which means not too dry, not too humid air) you can choose any bag.
If your home has drier air, or you typically buy yeast-based, store-bought breads, our cotton-look bag is better for you.
If the air in your home is very dry (typically in prefab apartmens), we don't recommend buying our bread bag. In extreme conditions, it will not perform as well as in average humidity, so the bread will dry out quickly. (Although it is healthier to the bread in our bag, it will not stay soft for long, please take this into account.)
If you buy/bake sourdough bread, or you live in a more humid apartment, you're better off with our looser woven linen bag, as the outside is more ventilated (available in grey and white colors in the webshop).
